Cruella was the first movie I've seen in a theatre in ten months. I was so excited, for various reasons.
First of all, of course, going back to the cinema, for how much I am a couch potato, I still enjoy the experience on a screen bigger than 13".
Then I was extremely curious to see Emma Stone in Cruella shoes, need to be honest, the fur lover villain wasn't ever one of my super favourites, most likely because Maleficent fills up basically my Top 10, but I really enjoyed this movie, conscious it is not perfect.
My latest approach to movies is: avoid any content pre-screening, Social Media are a great tool for communication and connection, but the dark side of the medal is: no more surprises. Everything is overshared, even way before the release dates and the spark of surprise is lacking nowadays. Hence, to protect myself from unwanted spoilers I tried to not read anything, including the plot, ahead of the release.
So, finding out Estella/Cruella is a wannabe Fashion Designer and the story goes around the Fashion world made me supremely excited, I love a good Cinema/Fashion meta.
After this nonsense intro, let's talk a little bit about the costumes and how fashion portrays characters.
The purpose of this blog is having a conversation about costume design, fashion and everything in between. How certain piece of clothes or outfits influence fashion or trending choices for everyday clothing.
Starting with a collection of iconic outfits is probably the most obvious choice but at the same time is quite on point, if we are trying to understand how the link among pop culture, fashion and movies is so strong.
After years writing a dissertation about Fashion and Cinema in the '50s in Italy, a little bit of bravery and a pandemic helped me to bundle up some ideas and start this blog. One of my many dreams is writing a book about the strong relationship between Fashion and Cinema. How Costume Design influenced the catwalks and viceversa, how powerful is the red carpet of a movie premier or during awards season, and so on.
But researching and writing a book, unfortunately for someone in my position, is not a doable project. Not one of the easiest task, I might say. Energy, time, money are essential and if I may have the first, I'm lacking on the latter ones.
So, why not to try the blog way, I said to myself in one lazy Annual Leave afternoon during a pandemic.
It would cost me nothing, I can manage my own time in my own terms, expanding my ideas and who knows where this could get me. Bonus point: practicing my written English.
I gave up many things I enjoy and that make me feel happy and good, it's time for me to get back on to them. So, here I am. On a path of babbling about outfits, costume design, stylist and The Devil Wears Prada.
Welcome & Enjoy.
